Distance Learning Syndrome
We have described the 5 stages prior to withdrawal: relaxation, addiction, resistance, compromise, and withdrawal. And there are 2 possible scenarios for continuing education, in the key to the current situation of self-isolation during the global pandemic: returning to school and leaving for the holidays.
It is worthwhile to cancel the difference in summer vacation time in different countries. If in Russia the last call is the twentieth of May, then in Japan it is March, Spain is June, Egypt is July, etc. As well as the beginning of the new school year: September in Russia, August in Finland, March in South Korea, etc.
Therefore, the decision at the state level to continue education during the pandemic is made in each country in its own way. Among the options: early completion of the school year, transferring part of the program to the next school year, continuing education on a schedule in the format of distance education.
Children do not affect this process. The process affects children. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the transition to the holidays to return to school, you should take the pros of the holidays for the minuses of the school and, accordingly, vice versa.
Vacation:
Pros:
1. Children go into rest mode in their usual schedule of the year. If in 5-10 years the child gets used to the fact that with the onset of summer, the academic load will be removed, then he will be mentally prepared to stretch the April-May classes at a distance.
2. The child finishes the year with better academic performance than in the regular school format. Because over the past quarter, he used the opportunities of free access to the Internet when solving verification and control works. I think that statistics on performance in a pandemic will show this later.
3. Fresh air. After months in a confined space, you can run up, walk up and talk.
Minuses:
1. The situation of uncertainty among high school students. Since they are supposed to shift the final exams and the incomprehensible situation with the university entrance exams, internal tension and stress increase.
2. This situation will create unequal conditions for admission to the university for metropolitan children and children from the provinces. Because the former have more advanced technical equipment gives an advantage in better preparation for exams.
3. Loss of performance and concentration. During the isolation period, it has already decreased, and reinforcement with three months of idleness will lead to even greater stress in the development of the material in the new year.
School
Pros:
1. Child safety. They are back in school hours under the responsibility of the school. Parents need not worry about what their child is doing while they are at work.
2. Once again, a plus for parents: they are relieved of responsibility for the education of the child, the competent submission of educational material for him.
3. Equal access to educational materials, direct and quick feedback from the teacher.
Minuses:
1. Again confused sleeping mode and the need for an early rise.
2. An increase in the teaching load, as there is a simultaneous return to circles, sections and extracurricular activities. Time for study is getting smaller.
Conclusions on what the withdrawal syndrome leads to:
1. If the learning process is disturbed, stress arises. A return to the previous system of education will force schoolchildren to restructure themselves once again.
2. Resentment due to an unfair assessment of knowledge. Pupils who rely on their own knowledge lose to the laggards, who used all the tricks of distance certification.
3. The reverse side: laggards have to return to objective certification in the classroom again and because of this an increase in aggression is possible.
4. Growth of dissatisfaction among parents due to a lack of understanding of the situation: why is home school performance better than with class work? So the teacher is subjective, because my child is the most intelligent.
5. Malnutrition. With home lunches, regular snacks and higher quality meals, the child returns to the school cafeteria or vending machines. This creates an additional burden on the body.
6. No one has canceled domestic duties. A vacuum cleaner becomes an object of hatred, because now it’s not at all up to him.
7. Obtaining a long distance education leads parents to the idea of switching to family or distance learning. This can be a plus for the child, if he is good at mastering the educational program, and a minus if the hopes for self-education on the part of the parents were exaggerated.
8. The described disadvantages of both the holidays and the return to school are the reasons for the growing anxiety of the child, which lead to psychosomatic disorders and illnesses.
